St. Joseph’s Girls’ School and College situated at 465, Mumfordganj, Prayagraj is a school for girls owned and managed
by Roman Catholic Diocese of Allahabad. It is open for all the girls without any distinction of caste, creed or economic
background. The school ensures to provide the globalised education to the needy girl students of the Mumfordganj locality
and the other surrounding communities.
It was formerly known as Umrao Singh Smarak Girls’ Inter College which was founded on 8th September 1968 by Mrs.
Sushila Devi with a motto “ to serve through education”, a vision to provide the best education to the girls of the
society irrespective of their economic status. The school became a Junior High School in 1971 and with the continuous
support of her family, it became High School in 1993-94 and Intermediate College in the year 1997-98. The college was r
ecognized by Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, Uttar Pradesh and run by Umrao Singh Smarak Samiti, a registered society under
the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
On 11th Nov 2010, Mr. Balbir Mathur, the then President of Umrao Singh Smarak Samiti met Most. Rev. Isidore Fernandes, the
then Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Allahabad and requested him to take over the management of the school. On 16th
March 2011, through the resolution passed by the Umrao Singh Smarak Samiti, the management of the college was handed over
to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Allahabad. On 24th April 2012, under the able leadership of Rev. Fr. Louis Mascarenhas,
the then principal of St. Joseph’s College started a section of St. Joseph’s College for girls in the campus in the name
of St. Joseph’s College Girls’ Wing and Mrs. Aparna Ranjan was appointed as its coordinator.
In the year 2015, due to the financial discrepancies and the non-disclosure of the papers, the admissions were closed and
the diocese withdrew from the management. In the year 2016 by the decisive decision of the Bishop Most. Rev. Raphy Manjaly,
to sort out the issues appointed his secretary, Rev. Fr. Stephen Manoj D’Souza as the manager. Withstanding all the
opposition and legal inadequacies, he finished the preliminary exchanges, meeting all the statutory requirements. On
26th December 2016, Mr. Balbir Mathur handed over the Umrao Singh Smarak Samiti, and on 3rd March 2017, Umrao Singh Smarak
Girls’ Inter College to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Allahabad. Under the earnest efforts of Fr. Stephen Manoj, The
College went through tremendous infrastructural upliftment.
On 3rd August 2017, Bishop blessed and inaugurated the school under the new name “St. Joseph’s Girls’ School and College
“and opened for the admissions. So, the year 2017 became the year of establishment and an independent school of Roman
Catholic Diocese as Rev. Fr. Stephen Manoj, the manager and Mrs. Aparna Ranjan, the coordinator. On 4th July, 219, after
obtaining the permissions from the Secretary, Ministry of Education and Local Education Departments, the President of the
College Most. Rev. Raphy Manjaly declared Umrao Singh Smarak Girls Inter College, Umrao Singh Smarak Primary School and St.
Joseph’s College Girls’ Wing under one name St. Joseph’s Girls’ College, Mumfordganj, Prayagraj.
The school is equipped with a well furnished library, reading room, infirmary, big computer lab and practical labs for
Physics, Chemistry and Biology. There is a 24 hour e-Care panel for day to day interaction with the parents. The school
website is updated regularly. Each class is equipped with the interactive board for audio-visual teaching which makes
each subject more interesting and purposeful.
In the year 2018, School started the Nursery Section without any books or notebooks. For the Kindergarten children,
attractions like bird house, aquarium, activity room and a beautiful play area make the school a fun place where the motto
is “Love, Laugh and Learn”.
